Bluewater has been named the top UK shopping destination, beating rival Westfield for the coveted spot.

Westfield, which in September opened the the 1.9m sq ft Stratford City shopping centre has been placed third in the hierarchy while Gateshead's Metro Centre came second. Westfield London, in Shepherd's Bush, is now fourth.

The index, put together by retail property expert Trevor Wood Associates, looks at the top 500 centres in the UK scoring them on attractiveness to shoppers, retailers and investors analysing everything from tenant turnover to number of shop vacancies.

Of the top 10 schemes, six are out of town shopping centres – highlighting the extent shoppers are lured away from traditional high streets.
