Cadência is a picture of Rio's sport and culture, the film explores the country’s ‘cadence’, its rhythm, and the true spirit of Brazil. It sets out to articulate the ambiguous essence of Rio de Janeiro’s symbolic identity through its people, passions and traditions. Exploring the underground phenomena of traditional kite culture, the masquerade of Clovis and of course, football. The film features commentary from academics, artists, and footballers.
“Articulate the ambiguous essence of symbolic identity. The real inspiration for Cadência was to be able to address aspects of Brazilian culture that I had come across after living in Rio for nearly three years. I feel that the generosity, attention and care the Brazilian people have shown me is reflected in the work I produce about their lives and their cultures,” says Director Daren Bartlett, March 2010
Coinciding with the film, the exhibition Cadência launches with Nike Stadiums at 1948 on 23rd March. Stills from the documentary will be featured alongside video showcase and sound installation. The film includes an exclusive 5.1 Surround Sound installation by David Kennedy & Adrian Corker and an exhibition of Jiwon Park’s original art stills that give an insight into her creative process.
