Harvey Nichols menswear line-up directional

With an ear to the ground that picks up even the faintest fashion rumblings, Harvey Nichols menswear is bringing some great new labels to town this Autumn, to add to its established fold that covers all bases from Kilgour to Kiminori Morishita.

Those looking to catch on to the next big thing in tailoring should consider a once very traditional label with a new lease of life. New to their stores for Autumn is Hardy Amies (couturier to HRH The Queen no less). The house has produced a dapper collection of suits, shirts and silk ties with modern, elegant cuts and an undercurrent of cool that should assure success with a new young gentleman.

Hot on their rails is also Alexander McQueen's brand new diffusion collection, McQ. Look out for rebellious styles influenced by teenagers and biker gangs - plaid trenches, sheepskin-lined denim and scorpion emblazoned knitwear. Danish label Nerve is new this Autumn and getting hotter by the minute. A super-skinny silhouette of slender pants, slim-lapel tailoring and fine-gauge knits is already being picked up by the indie band brigade. Harvey Nichols in the UK has stores in London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dublin.

Harvey Nichols slated for International expansion

Harvey Nichols, arguably the UK's most fashion-forward and decadent department store, has long been eyeing international cities for further expansion of its high-end retail offer.
Russia, Poland, Lebanon, India, Indonesia and more than one country in South America have been added to Harvey Nichols' wish list of potential international sites. A spate of successive new openings of licensed stores is being planned for as early as 2007.
With three stores in the UK, international expansion seemed the most strategic route for growth. Harvey Nichols will focus on emerging markets where it can be the premier fashion destination.

Patrick Hanley, the group's commercial director told Drapers: “We want to be the number one store, a highly focused fashion store, in key cities.”
America may have Barney's and Brazil may have Dazlu, however there are many cities that do not have comparable high-end boutiques to match the offer of Harvey Nichols.
With current stores in London, Dublin, Leeds, Edinburgh, Hong Kong and Riyadh, the next store to be opened is a 135,000 sq ft boutique in Dubai later this month. In September a smaller store is due to open in Istanbul, Turkey, and Moscow and St Petersburg are on the list for 2008.
In Jakarta, a store is planned for autumn and another in Beirut, Lebanon. Add India, Argentina and Chile to the list and the strategy becomes impressively ambitious.

Harvey Nichols to open UK boutiques

The luxury department store chain Harvey Nichols is to open a string of boutiques across the UK, according to the Independent. The group, best known for its flagship seven-floor department store in London's Knightsbridge, is planning to roll out the 10 smaller stores by 2015.

The chain has already expanded beyond its London home, with another department store in Leeds, a three-storey outlet in Manchester and a five-storey shop in Edinburgh. The stores sell a wide range of goods, including designer labels and accessories, beauty products, homewares and food. They also boast restaurants, bars and cafés.
But Harvey Nichols has increasingly turned its attention to boutique shops. It opened its first and only smaller UK store in Birmingham in 2001, and the success of this venture means that more will now follow. The chain is expected to announce the start of the expansion shortly by taking a site in Bristol, due to open in 2008.

Harvey Nichols has also been expanding overseas, and the compact store that opened in Dublin in September is likely to be the model for the UK expansion. It sells a smaller range of beauty products, fashion and food and has just one restaurant.

Branches of Harvey Nichols are due to open in Dubai and Istanbul, but these will be traditional large-scale department stores. The former, which will open next month, will be spread across 120,000sq ft.
Given iconic status in the television series Absolutely Fabulous as the characters' favourite shopping haunt, Harvey Nichols is owned by the Hong Kong-based businessman Dickson Poon, who took the retailer private in 2003.

Earlier this year the chain, which also owns the Oxo Tower and Prism restaurants in London, reported full-year pre-tax profits of £2.4m, a slide on the previous year's £5m. It blamed the challenging conditions on the war in Iraq and the outbreak of the Sars virus in Asia.
As well as smaller UK stores, Mr Poon is known to be keen to expand the chain into Asia and is also considering opening in Moscow, to take advantage of the surge in levels of personal wealth in parts of Russian society in recent years.

Harvey Nic's temporary death trap

Tragedy struck luxury department store Harvey Nichols yesterday when a sales girl was shot and killed by a security guard. The man shot her before turning the gun on himself, thereby ending his own life. Both victims were in their 30s and although circumstances surrounding their deaths are not clear, it is thought that the man had developed an obsession with the woman, who did not reciprocate his ardour. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting took place just before closing time, sending shoppers into a veritable panic. However, no one else was injured and the cordons that were placed around the premises last night were gone by morning.

Bang for the buck

London's most expensive trousers can now be admired in Harvey Nichols. John Galliano's creation, a one-off pair of suede men's trousers lined with duchesse satin and black Swarovski crystal skull designs down each side seam, is signed by Galliano himself. The tag with his signature can be removed for drycleaning purposes. The trousers cost a whopping GBP 8,580.

Richard Gray, press manager at Harvey Nichols said: "We launched Galliano's menswear for autumn/winter 2004-5 and decided that men wanted something really special this season - something with provenance. These trousers are a real investment piece for a true Galliano fan. And they'd look equally sexy on a woman as a man." Ah yes, we'll leave this one to the lucky few.

In the name of fashion

According to the upmarket London deparment store Harvey Nichols, most of us would give up toilet paper for the sake of a designer handbag. At least, that is what it will advertise in a new campaign in which it celebrates a number of its best offerings as worthy of any sacrifice.

The campaign is presented as a calender. March is the month in which you may eat baked beans every day in order to be able to afford a pair of gorgeous Christian Louboutins. April will see you giving up toilet paper to be able to buy a Luella bag and May will have you sitting at home every night to save up for a Martin Margiela jacket.

Says Julia Bowen, marketing director of Harvey Nichols: "The campaign taps into a real insight of the priorities of the young fashion lover of today who will do anything to get the latest must-have item." Perhaps, but at the expense of personal hygiene? I don't think so!

Harvey Nichols Still A Shopping Mecca

It may have a reputation as Harrods' younger, trendier neighbour and with it's sensationally hip window displays, it's easy to see why, but in actual fact, Harvey Nichols opened in 1813, 36 years before Harrods, the 'other' famous London shopping Mecca. Made infamous as 'Harvey Nicks' by cult '90s show, Absolutely Fabulous, this six-story style emporium attracts trendsetters, it-girls and celebrities with the promise of fashion nirvana.

Its unrivalled reputation for fashion began in 1920 when founder Benjamin Harvey, the owner of a small linen shop, went into partnership with Colonel Nichols and began to sell Oriental carpets, imported silks and luxury goods.Today, every fashion label worth its salt is represented here, from luminaries such as Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Gaultier to exlusive labels from around the world including Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler and Yohji Yamamoto.

The beauty department stocks ranges from fashion houses like Chanel, Versace and Christian Dior. The home department is full of famous labels so you can have Calvin Klein towels or Armani pillows to match your designer wardrobe. Even the own brand goods sold in the luxury food hall are exquisitely packaged to make your kitchen look fabulous. And lets not forget the kitchen counter cleaner. This, too, can be chichi and needn't be a run-of-the mill household product.

Hardened shopaholics can give their overworked Jimmy Choos a rest at the fifth floor's famous café or stock up on Bolly in the wine department.

Harvey Nichols To Open In Dublin

Harvey Nichols is due to open in Dublin as one of the anchor tenants at the prestigious Dundrum Town Centre development, next March. The upmarket department store is reported to be paying a rent of around €1.5m a year for a prime location in the €250m development on Dublin's south side.

The Harvey Nichols store will face onto the new civic square at Dundrum, where other retailers already signed as tenants at Dundrum include Marks and Spencer, House of Fraser, Zara, Hugo Boss, Furla, Tommy Hilfiger, and H&M.

Harvey Nicks' high fashion offer will put it in direct competition with Dublin's venerable Brown Thomas department store, with both featuring many of the same designer brands. Brown Thomas is part of the Weston family empire which also includes Selfridges and London stores Heals and Fortnum & Mason.

Harvey Nichols is owned by Hong Kong entrepreneur Dickson Poon, who aims to transform it into a global luxury goods brand in its own right. The Dublin store is to be modelled on the Harvey Nichols Edinburgh outlet, which like Dundrum is part of a new building development. Other new stores planned for next year include outlets in New York and Dubai. Beyond its flagship London store, Harvey Nichols now has outlets in Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Riyadh.

T Is For Tres Cool

Alexandra Shulman from Vogue recently wrote they are the coolest thing to come out of America since the hotdog, and every magazine since seems to be dedicating its glossy pages to praise this LA-based über cool t-shirt label called C&C California.

This super hot label has gotten Manhattanites and Londoners so excited, there are waiting lists at some stores as these comfortable Ts have been flying off the shelves. The secret? The Ts are cut on the bias, so they hug the body a little but aren't too fitted. And there is something about the smooth, soft texture of the fabric that makes them especially desirable.

They come in lots of colours, all reminiscent of the vivid early 70s surf and skate culture. The tones range from mint green to aquamarine blue, but the best about Claire and Cheyann 's Ts is that every piece and colour is created to layer and mix together. Offering an endless number of combinations.

With a celebrity following ranging from Oprah and Cameron Diaz to Jennifer and Brad, the laid-back LA mood is sure to be a hit overseas.Get yours at Harvey Nichols 020 7235 5000.

Harvey Nichols To Look Abroad For Development

Harvey Nichols is targeting Istanbul in Turkey and cities in South America and India for new stores. The retailer's chief executive Joseph Wan singled out these areas as being potentially more profitable than developed markets such as Paris and New York.Wan said: "South America, India and Istanbul are all areas of interest for new licensed openings. They each have high populations with rapidly growing proportions of wealthy consumers."

Wan said that in each case Harvey Nichols would only need to attract 1 to 2 per cent of consumers to create a "healthy business." He cited lower distribution, warehouse and employment costs as attractive factors in setting these markets apart from developed territories. Wan also reiterated the potential for Harvey Nichols to bring in a big-name designer to help develop its own-brand line. "Our womenswear is still not a comprehensive collection and is mainly driven by sales of sheepskin garments," he said. May we suggest Tom Ford?

Harvey Nichols Opens In Manchester

Harvey Nichols aims to bring a sprinkling of Hollywood glamour to the North West with the opening of its last full-scale department store in Manchester. The 95,000sq ft, three-floor store, which opened last week, has accessories and cosmetics on the split level ground floor. Womenswear, lingerie and kidswear is on the first and menswear, the food market, bar and restaurant is on the second floor.

The interior of the store has been designed by Four IV, the agency behind the company's Edinburgh store, which opened last year. Subtle colours, tinted glass and silk screens draw on Hollywood glamour and Art Deco influences. The great sense of space create a luxurious feel so the merchandise and brands stand out.

The proximity of Selfridges, which opened in Manchester's Exchange Square last year, will only add to the city centre's growing reputation as a shopping destination. While the Manchester store will be the last full-scale department store opening, Harvey Nichols believes there is scope for up to 10 small format stores along the lines of Birmingham's Mailbox.

Bid on minority share Harvey Nichols

The exclusive Harvey Nichols Group is going to exit the London stock exchange and revert to private ownership. Dickson Poon has offered a bid of 250p per share to acquire the remaining 49.9 per cent stake of Harvey Nichols he does not already own. According to Poon the takeover and delisting of the London-based company will allow Harvey Nichols's smaller investors to unlock the value of their shares, which are rarely traded. Dickson Poon bought Harvey Nichols in 1991 and took the company public in 1996. He owns the Hong Kong-based retailer Dickson Concepts International through his investment company Broad Grain.

Harvey Nichols saw pre-tax profit decline by 19.7 per cent to GBP 12.5m in the past year. The company is coping with increasing high street competition from retailers such as Selfridges, and a substantial slump in tourism.

New Harvey Nichols'store too popular for its own good.

Scotland's first Harvey Nichols store was forced to close its doors just hours after it opened Thursday because it was so full. A lunchtime rush at the new £20 million four storey outlet in the heart of Edinburgh led to staff closing the doors and turning people away. Normal service was resumed a couple of hours later.

"There were just so many people trying to get in, it's been amazing," A Harvey Nichols spokesman told the Daily Record. Harvey Nichols is an international luxury lifestyle store specialising in prestigious and exclusive brand name merchandise with stores in London and Leeds. In 2001 Harvey Nichols opened the first small format store in Birmingham. The opening of the store is Edinburgh will be followed next year by a store in Manchester.
