G-Star turns to US for expansion
Trendy Dutch denim brand G-Star is turning its attention to expansion in the US . The brand will hold its first US fashion show in New York in February, focusing on women's wear. In the Netherlands , the focus is more on men's wear, for which the brand is better known in its home market. The highlight of the collection is its G-Star Raw line, made from raw denim. Available upon request, the hand-made jeans will retail from $1,000.
“If you want to be an international brand, you have to be strong in the US and Japan , which is what we are focusing on in 2007,” Deepak Gayadin, the company's North American director, told WWD. He also explained why the brand is concentrating more on women's wear in the US than in Europe . Originally, women's wear represented 20 percent of the total collection, whereas it now accounts for 40 percent. “The women's market is stronger in the US than it is in Europe , so for us, this is a big change. We've hired a women's design team and realize the importance of the women's collection, so the show in New York will be mostly women.”
G-Star plans to open another 60 directly owned stores globally this year, in addition to the existing 73 locations. Eight of the 60 stores will be in the US , the first of which will open on Union Square in New York on 15 June. The brand already has a smaller store in Soho . In addition, the company will open stores in cities like Moscow , Kiev and Bangkok . According to WWD, industry sources have predicted that G-Star will generate $60 million in retail volume in the US by the end of this year, up 40 percent from last year. Gayadin refused to comment on volume projections. G-Star executives could not be reached for comment.

G-Star to open in London
Dutch jeans label G-Star Raw is to open a much anticipated London flagship store later this year. The location is in the trendy Seven Dials district in Covent Garden . The area is renowned as an upscale, hip shopping destination. The G-Star store, which has a retail surface of 2500 square feet spread over two floors, is located in an old warehouse. The brand already wholesales to various stores like Urban Outfitters, House of Fraser and Selfridges. The opening will be part of a larger global expansion plan, with 23 store openings slated for the second half of 2006. The company currently has more than 50 stores worldwide.
G-Star has made a name for itself as a jeans innovator, working with rough, raw denim. This is the basis of the collection, with new authentic details and washings being added each season. The brand also offers the G-Star Retailormade Store Concept, which enables G-Star customers and entrepreneurs to start a mono-brand G-Star Store. They are supported by G-Star's back office and corporate infrastructure, while having full control of business operations.

G-Star donates funds to Live 8
Denim brand G-Star has revealed that its participation, and that of its dealers, in this summer LIVE 8 concert helped raise €750,000.
Especially for the event, the label produced a limited edition T-shirt, the LIVE 8 Charitee. The Charitee was made in black and white for men and women, and G-Star dealers worldwide sold them through their stores and concessions. G-Star International is now donating all the profits directly to LIVE AID.

G-Star by Marc Newson
One of the most influential industrial designers in the world, Marc Newson, has created a line of jeans, jackets and tops for the up-market clothing brand G-Star. The new collection will be released in the spring of 2005.
Part of this collection has been included in a Marc Newson retrospective which first took place in the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands and opened in the London Design Museum on 23 October. The collection, which features clothes inspired by typical Japanese work wear, will eventually be presented to the Japanese media in Tokyo on 25 November.
Following this, the collection will be available at a selected number of exclusive fashion retailer such as Selfridges in London, Isetan in Tokyo and Colette in Paris.
