Fast fashion may be thriving during the recession, however value retailer Tesco saw a 2 per cent fall in
its clothing sales over the 53 weeks to February 28. The news comes as other discount retailers such as Primark and Matalan are seeing its clothing sales surge.
According to Drapers, industry observers believe Tesco needs to address its ranges, pricing and presentation to get back on track. Maureen Hinton, senior analyst at Verdict Research, told the fashion trade publication: "with shoppers looking so closely at budgets, you have to grab them with value or inspire them with design. The ranges and presentation at Tesco are not terribly inspiring. It needs to communicate clearly whether it is about value or fashion."
