PFW: Stella McCartney & Celine
Tuesday, 06 March 2012
Stella McCartney took her ready-to-wear in a very focused sportswear direction, perhaps because the designer will be dressing the Olympians later this year. The body contour paneling McCartney introduced for Spring were brought back, with this time in sporty tops, sweaters, and tennis dresses, mixing colours - like cobalt blue, and texture to make it more playful.
Being true to her British roots, there were also looks that take the girl out of the city, like an egg-shaped coat or a tweed suit.
The house of Celine scaled back from showing a full catwalk presentation of its new AW12 collection to an intimate audience of handpicked journalists at the company's showroom.
Phoebe Philo, who is in the last term of her pregnancy, didn't disappoint. Her linear, masculine aesthetic this season was inspired by the poured concrete of Brutalist architecture, California palm trees, and punk references.
Staying away from red carpet and frou frou dresses, Celine has always embraced the modern woman's wardrobe, or at least the fashionable woman. Outerwear with side zips and panels were oversized with dropped shoulders, wide belts and geometric colour blocks. Trousers had track pant stripes and zippers at the knee of calf and came in luxurious, flowy fabrics. Fuchsia and bright blues added colour depth, as did coats with double faced lapels or a smidgen or red on the back of a fur.
