Uniqlo sales down, stores up

Wednesday, 05 January 2011
The same store sales of casual clothing company Uniqlo decreased by 15,5% year on year, and its brand own stores sales reduced by 11.4%. Total sales, including online, went down with 11.6%. Winter items sales stayed behind, because of the relatively high temperatures, hence the same store sales in December on a year-on-year basis turned out lower.

By 2020, Japan’s leading clothing retail chain is looking to open 200 stores in the US and increase its sales numbers by sixfold in the next decade. Uniqlo’s only US store is located in New York’s SoHo.

“The United States is one of the most important markets for us,” Shin Odake, CEO of Uniqlo’s US, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “We want to become the number one retailer in the world.”

Uniqlo was formerly a division of Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. Since 2005 is Uniqlo a consolidated subsidiary of Fast Retailing, which is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Fast Retailing also sells apparel brand Theory apparel in the US. The company also operates in the UK, France, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia and Malaysia.
