Budget fashion chain Primark has signed up as the anchor store for Lancaster’s

Marketgate shopping centre to become the city’s largest retail store.

Primark, which operates 162 stores in the UK, will occupy a 50,000 square foot unit situated in the city’s old indoor market hall, which has already been granted planning permission. Building work could start as early as Easter this year, with hand over to Primark scheduled for early 2015.

Allied (Lancaster) Limited, the owners of the Marketgate shopping centre since January 2008, said: “The new 50,000 square foot store will dramatically improve the retail landscape in Lancaster city centre. It will benefit the whole of the city centre, not just Marketgate shopping centre, and would stem the leakage from the city.

“A store of this size would create both permanent and part-time employment opportunities and substantially increase the footfall and spend throughout the whole city centre. Lancaster has waited a long time for real and substantial retail improvement and this new letting brings to fruition the vision of both the developer and the council.”

In addition to reconfiguring the old market hall, the planned enlarged site also includes buildings over Gillison’s Lane, and will encompass a number of the units currently facing the market hall to create an extended building with a frontage onto Marketgate/Cornmarket, which will form a new integral part of the shopping centre.
