All things bright and beautiful – that’s what will be appearing in our spring/summer
wardrobes next year if September’s London Fashion Week is anything to go by. Here we spotlight three key trends from some of Britain’s most influential fashion houses so you can invest now.
Mellow yellow
It wouldn’t be a spring/summer collection without a few zesty bright colours, and while oranges and reds put in an appearance at the fashion week shows, the most popular shade in on the runway was yellow.
Highlighter-bright neons livened up Aquascutum’s otherwise muted palette; Burberry championed mustard-toned pleated dresses while Jaeger’s cut-out shift dress was in a toned down, retro form of the colour.
Tip: If all-over yellow isn’t for you, try adding just a splash of colour with your accessories. Mulberry's famous Bayswater handbags have been given a yellow update for spring.
High-shine
Metallics are set to be a huge look this spring, with designers going crazy for gloss in all its forms - from patent leather to plastic or even PVC. Aquascutum showed off high-shine PVC trousers, vests and skirts and added high-shine panels to many pieces in its collection, from silk dresses to tops. Mulberry also got in on the glossy trend with shiny leather trench coats and skirts.
Tip: To work the high-shine trend in your wardrobe without going all out for the biker chic look, throw a leather jacket over a floral dress or add a patent handbag or Mary Janes to your outfit.
Sporty style
Olympic fever is set to hit the fashion world in 2012, but that doesn’t mean we’ll all be wearing tracksuits and cycling shorts. LFW designers kept their sporty touches in the detail, adding racer backs on dresses and vests and toggles to jumpers. Aquascutum nodded to the trend with drawstring bags and string vests, while over at Mulberry models wore drawstring dresses with ribbed leggings.
Tip: Women’s coats are a great way to work this trend into your wardrobe. Look for one with subtle sporty touches, such as toggles or drawstrings.
Hair and beauty trends
It’s not just clothing getting a high-shine makeover for s/s12 - metallics are big news in make-up too. Striking shimmer eye dust was layered on gold foundation on the Vivienne Westwood Red Label runway and top-to-toe gold at Topshop Unique – think hair sparkle, cheek shine and nail polish – helped to add striking highlights to any look. Hair-wise, London Fashion Week was all about length and ponytails, with Jaeger models sporting pristine side ponytails, and those on the Aquascutum runway low slung ponies. It may also be time to embrace other natural hair growth, as strong brushed brows were spotted at many of the shows.
What the front row wore
Making just as big an impact as the runway fashions were LFW’s front row celebs. Pippa Middleton’s Alice Temperley fan print mini received more column inches than the dresses on the Temperley catwalk. And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Donna Air, Sienna Miller and Gemma Arteton were among the celebrities to champion the wet-look at Burberry in skinny leather pants.
