High street summer discounting to start early

High street shoppers are in for an early sales period, with Debenhams confirming it will start its discounting this week by reducing £200 million worth of stock in its stores and online.

The department store chain said its 'Summer Spectacular' will see reductions of up to 25% across thousands of lines in womenswear, accessories, menswear, home, childrenswear, cosmetics, lingerie, sports and leisure.

Debenhams said the promotion will save consumers a total of £200 million, adding that it expected other retailers who offer price promises to quickly follow suit thereby kick starting an early summer of seasonal discounting.

Michael Sharp, Debenhams CEO said: "There really is no better time to lighten the mood of the nation. As the weather improves and attention turns to the holidays and the Jubilee, we will be offering fantastic prices throughout the store and online - at a time when customers need it most.

The promotion runs to Sunday 27 May.
