High street spending has seen an increase over the
bank holiday season and warm, sunny weather.
According to high street sales tracker BDO showed that like-for-like sales rose by 3.7 per cent in April. That is an improvement from March, when like-for-like sales fell 1.2 per cent in the five weeks to April 3, the worst performance of any month since January 2010.
“The UK consumer is a resilient beast,” said Don Williams, head of retail at BDO. “Shopping is part of our national psyche, and this isn’t likely to change anytime soon. But consumers are ensuring retailers work hard for a sale.”
The revival was led by fashion, with the release of summer ranges spurring a 5.1 per cent increase in like-for-like sales.
Retailers hope that the cost of cotton will begin to return to more normal levels towards the end of this year, or in 2012.
