Bank holiday shoppers deterred by weather

Retail sales in April declined due to the wet weather and the first Bank Holiday of the year was no different. Stores reported a drop in footflow and sales, after the rain and cold weather kept consumers at home.

According for that BRC-KPMG merchandising income Monitor, like for like sales were down 3.3% in comparison with last April. Footwear showed the greatest decline since January 2008 and clothing income also dropped substantially.

The proprietor of the one sportswear indie said: “The rainfall is not assisting anyone, especially individuals of us who market sandals or swimwear. We have been accomplishing nicely in March but almost everything has slowed down.”
