American Apparel kicks off 2012 selling more

Wednesday, 08 February 2012
Californian retailer American Apparel said total sales in January rose 14% from a year earlier to $41.4 million, marking the fourth-straight month of improvement and showing renewed strength at the troubled company.

Dov Charney, the company's chief executive and founder, said he was "very encouraged by the sales performance."

In the same vein, online sales increased 39% over the same period, while comparable-store sales rose 11%. It is worth of note to stress that American Apparel measures comparable-store sales as the combination of online sales and sales at stores open at least a year.

For the same period, comparable store sales increased an estimated 15% on an estimated 11% increase at retail stores and an estimated 39% increase in online sales. For the month wholesale net sales increased an estimated 21%.

"Higher sales running through our three sales channels — retail, online and imprintable wholesale — allow us to continue improving operational efficiencies at the factory, as well as leverage corporate costs, thereby improving prospects for our long-term growth and profitability," Charney said in a statement released earlier this week.
