Christopher Bailey at Burberry took inspiration from British artist LS Lowry adding a masculine spirit to delicate and intricate detailing
and cut. "It was about the mood, the sombre colours, softer shoulders and masculine cuts to classic coats - along with the painterly brush strokes and craft," Bailey said of the artist's influence on his collection to WGSN.
Forest greens, smoky browns, crushed damson depicted an autumnal mood; offset with flashes of spiky thorn-like jewellery and huge gem-covered necklaces, or the glint of gold buckles on the newly launched Lowry bags. Painterly effects and handcraft details were indeed evident - real feathers were individually painted with an iridescent sheen, while leather versions were laser-cut and tiered to give a degradé effect on coats. The eponymous Burberry coat next season comes in a roomier silhouette with balloon sleeves and cocooning shape. There were mannish looks with roomy cuts - worn unbelted and irreverent - as well as more feminine fit-and-flare shapes that were tiered or crafted in smocked velvet. |
